Marathi Bloggers Meet

Recently, I was lucky enough to attend the Marathi Bloggers Meet at Dadar. The reason I say lucky enough was because I was forunately told about it taking place by Mr Verleker. Though I dont consider myself to be so important  in the Marathi Blggoers Circle that i get a mail invite regarding it, but I realised after a little googling and searching on FB that the event was very poorly publicised and many people in the Marathi Blogger/Webmaster had no clue about it. I also failed to realize why the registrations were ‘closed’ a few days before as if a huge crowd….

Hello World, we are here :)

May 3rd, 2009

Phew ! It’s been a really really busy and long weekend from 1st to 3rd May for Team MSS. So it’s time to rest, but alas! Soon it will time for Monday Morning Blues. After having a successful launch, Team MSS is all smiling :) . It has been really rewarding to know that the MSS concept has been welcomed by one and all, with arms wide open :) . The songs – ‘ Hard day’s night ‘ and ‘ With arms wide open ‘ keep ringing at the back our ears ;) .

Team MSS is now gearing up for more visitors hitting the site soon in the coming weeks. Apart from Maharashtrians living in India, we have a special target audience – Maharashtrians living abroad, especially in US who are very active among their Respective Mandals. We are sure they will be especially happy to have a virtual peek into Marathi Culture, away from their homeland, through the medium of MarathiSS.com :) . If the response is good enough, we may soon have to revise the Sangraha Database Structure, in say around six months or one year down the line. You may then get to see a multi-tiered Sangraha similar to a Google Web Directory. Watch out for sites featured weekly on our homepage from a particular category.

A special mention about why we are not including YouTube Video links, or ESnips, Cool Toad Download links in the Sangraha. The reason is, the videos and songs shared on these sites are already very popular, indexed, and very easily searchable. It makes no sense promoting them. The aim of MarathiSS is to bring forward websites which are lost in the maze of the World Wide Web. Besides there are a few legal issues accompanying sharing of these links, in which we do not wish to get involved  :)

Why a discussion on a MarathiSS Forum would prove more useful than that on an Orkut Community …

May 3rd, 2009

Picture this example … An Ajay Atul fan, who has just heard a few songs from their latest album on Radio, in his excitement, rushes to Google to find some more info about them, their Discography, their Biography etc ( Keep in mind; for the younger generation books, magazines, newspapers are a secondary source of information… Google stands before all of them ) Too bad … He is disappointed to find scores of irrelevant results listed on the very first page of Google. The reason you may ask ? Well … there is a shortage of sites dedicated to people admired in Maharashtra, on the internet. ( One may have noticed, it is quite the opposite in case of celebrities in South India . I have come across a lot of sites beautifully made and having a huge online fan following dedicated to people they admire :) .) Secondly, there are times when such information is available on the internet, but in a discussion forum of a social networking site like Orkut. Now what happens is that, this content is not searchable on Google and searching inside Orkut, also wouldn’t be that convenient an option ( not many people are aware that it is even possible ). The result is; the already sparsely available information is hidden from the world in a private domain, unsearchable to the world; also resulting in a decrease of Marathi website presence on the Google searches.

The first advantage of a discussion on a MSS Forum would be that it would be Google Searchable. So your post regarding a certain topic will most probably be visible on the very first page of Google, if someone searches for information using the relevant keywords associated with your post.

Secondly, we have given you an option of uploading user generated content on Forums. The upload size limit has been set in such a way that illegal sharing of songs or other copyrighted material is discouraged. So the members of the Forum may share, for example, a poem written by them in the form of a text file.

We would also like to inform members that, the forums are created to provide a platform for discussion on a certain topic and also to document information about certain entities which do not have a website of their own. For example, one would like to post an entry about a small restaurant which serves authentic Non-Veg Marathi food, but doesn’t have a site of its own.

Finally we would like to conclude that – more the discussion on a MSS Forum, more would be the crawling by Google, which would mean more member post visibility and more visibility for MarathiSS, which would further bring in more visibility to all Marathi sites that we are promoting; which ultimately would mean better and more relevant results for our friends looking out for information out there on Google :) .

PS – The MSS Sangraha has also been planned in such a way that, a description ( in English script ) always accompanies the site listed in a specific category. This would again help in indexing the particular site on Google, especially if all its contents are in Devnagari Script.

The beginning of MSS and our sentiments behind it …

April 20th, 2009

Namaskar Mandali :) ,

We are extremely delighted to announce the release of our website, MarathiSS.com; that’s right, we have our own home on the web now. It also gives us great pleasure to tell you that we are particularly lucky to have Maharashtra Day as the auspicious day of our site release :) .

After going through the Vision and Mission, you must have recognized the reason we are pushing for more and more text being written in English script, but of course in Marathi Language. This site chiefly aims to promote other Marathi Sites, which beautifully capture the essence of the rich and varied Marathi culture.

We felt there was a need to have something that provides a snapshot, as well as a doorway to the Marathi Culture online, especially for people like us …  average Marathi youth disconnected in many ways from Marathi Culture, yet proud of being Marathi, based on whatever knowledge we have about Marathi culture :) . We felt that a website, especially something like File hippo, a directory that would point to all interesting sites grouped into various categories would serve the purpose.

So thus began the journey of MarathiSS…

After facing few restrictions in terms of creativity at the wiki dot site, we decided to buy our very own domain, and marathiss.com sounded so perfect and beautiful ;) . And thus began the process of collecting interesting Marathi sites and grouping them in their relevant categories. We also have a forum which serves as a platform for members to discuss anything regarding Marathi culture.

You can consider this site as hobby work done by four youngsters who are passionate about Marathi culture. We feel there needs to be greater representation of budding Marathi Culture talent and entrepreneurship on the World Wide Web as well as the real world. This idea was basically born after facing certain situations in the very capital of Maharashtra. To be precise, we usually have had situations where we have gone to the extent of organising weekend food trips to cities like Pune, cause there is a severe non availability of Marathi Food when it comes to places like Mumbai and Navi Mumbai :p. This is perhaps because Maharashtrians are not that enterprising or business minded as compared to other communities of India :) . Which is why it’s sometimes sad to see an extremely rich and varied culture not receiving the appreciation and visibility it deserves. Through this site, we wish to promote Marathi Culture in our very own small way and also appeal to people to be a little more enterprising when it comes to publicising and promoting a product, an item ,a foodstuff or a bit of Marathi culture, however small or tiny it maybe. Just like Vada pav, Pav Bhaji, Misal Pav, Veg Kolhapuri are popular, wouldn’t it be nice to see Sabudanyachi Khichadi, Thalipeeth, PuranPoli, Varan Bhat, Piyush or Basundi or even Faral items listed in a regular restaurant menu along with the regular North Indian and South Indian cuisine? There are many small specialities which are linked to specific regions of Maharashtra like Konkan, Varad, Marathwada and their availability is limited to that region only. Kai Majja yete when naatevaikankade gelyavar kadhi Kokanatali fish curry khayala milate, kiva Varadaat ani Kolhapurat jaun masta tikhat jevan and thecha milato. It would be even nicer to see ashya chotya mothya goshti commercialised and documented on the World Wide Web before the knowledge base is lost in the coming years. The best way to start this is, we feel, through the medium of the internet, which is the first choice of seeking information for the present generation … Wouldn’t it be nice to see a greater representation of Marathi Culture in a Bollywood Film, when it’s possible to have every alternative song in Bollywood, in Punjabi or Urdu :) ; or isn’t it high time we have a entry about Music Directors like Ajay Atul featured in Wikipedia? By stating this example in a blog entry, we are basically trying to explain our feelings behind having such a site online. In fact there are many aspects to this, which can be discussed here, not restricted to Food, Movies and Music alone. We don’t mean to show disrespect for any culture or demean anyone; we have tremendous respect for cultures of all other states and regions and also for their peopleJ. It’s only that, we are simply fans of Maharashtra, its Culture and its simple and loving people, just the way you are, and are very happy to be involved with a project that will promote ‘Aapala Marathmola Culture’ in our own special way :) .

We encourage well wishers to support the site if they like what we are doing. Our aim is not content creation, but to simply promote the already existing or newer content on the web and put it forward to the world, in the form of a Sangraha. Great efforts have been taken by the members of The MSS Team to gather information about sites which can be listed, but I am sure you too have a lot more suggestions regarding interesting sites which can be added in the Sangraha. So, do get your sites, personal WebPages, Picasa albums and Blogs and help us promote you in our own small way. We have even made a forum for you to have discussions with likeminded individuals in your area of interestJ. Your comments and suggestions and praises and even curses are most valuable and will only help us improve. Do report dead links, incorrect classifications or any other mistakes from our side. We will try to rectify the errors as soon as possible. Finally, we would like the Sangraha to grow and take the shape of something like a Google or Yahoo online web directory

Hope you have a wonderful experience throughout your time spent at MarathiSS.com :) .

Welcome to MarathiSS!

April 6th, 2009

Hi Friends,

Namaskar :)

It has been observed that Marathi Cinema, Music, Food, Theatre etc has got a HUGE Boost lately due to the emergence of Reality shows on Various Marathi Channels, Music Directors like Ajay Atul, TV programs about Maharashtrian cuisine , Nataks and Movies which now connect with the Marathi youth.

There are numerous sites and forums available online and on Orkut or Facebook which very beautifully capture the essence of Maharashtrian Culture in web pages and communities dedicated to Poetry, Music, Food, Dance, Cinema, Festivals, Spirituality to name a few …

Many of these sites use Devanagari script which unfortunately is avoided by our new generation, rendering those practically UNREAD and UNTOUCHED by majority of the population.

Also content written in Devanagari script and Social Networking Sites content doesn’t feature in the Default English Google Search and thus many of these beautiful sites and communities are lost on the maze of the World Wide Web.

Although these sites have their Faithful Fans, unfortunately majority of the audience has no idea about their existence.

Also it has been observed that one has to search really hard to find a particular song online for download because few people believe in sharing stuff online ( especially rare songs and videos ) although it conveniently rots on their hard disks, unknown to the world.

It is to encourage this sharing of Multimedia ( using legal means ) , that this forum has been made …

In brief, the aims and objectives of starting such a forum are …

  • To make it easier to search and find song download links, videos, nataks, movies, artwork etc with the help of suggestions from other members.
  • To encourage more and more people to share their Multimedia Collection online.
  • Most Importantly to popularize the already existing Marathi sites and NOT to replace them.
  • To serve as a Centralized Documentation of all Online Marathi Resources.
  • To encourage existing works to be translated in English font and also creation of new work in English font.
  • To maximize presence of all useful Marathi sites and download links on the Google Search Engine results.
  • To serve as a entry point to useful Marathi information already existing on the Web.
  • To recommend useful Communities on Social Networking Sites like Orkut or Facebook.

and many more …

Team MarathiSS.com
